In a flashback episode exploring Peggy Mitchell and her family's background, EastEnders will welcome Peggy Mitchell back.

Jaime Winstone will portray a young Peggy Mitchell in an EastEnders flashback episode.

Jaime Winstone will portray a younger version of the well-known fictitious landlady, the BBC announced.

The late Dame Barbara Windsor was perhaps most known for her portrayal of Mitchell, the matriarchal head of the household.

In 1994, Dame Barbara joined the soap opera and quickly rose to stardom. After six years of coping with Alzheimer's illness, she passed away in 2020 at the age of 83.

Before the actress became a regular cast member of the soap opera, Jo Warne's guest role as Peggy Mitchell debuted in 1991.

In the 2017 BBC biopic Babs, Winstone, the 37-year-old daughter of actor Ray Winstone, played a younger version of Dame Barbara herself.

It has been such an honor to fill Peggy Mitchell's and Barbara's shoes for the first and second time, respectively, she added.

When you take on such a legendary job, there is definitely a good amount of pressure, but I really liked it.

Winstone expressed hope that she had "done Barbara justice" and added that taking on the part had "truly solidified my love and affection for Barbara."

The upcoming episode, which will air in the autumn, will also blend characters who have already been on television with those who have never done so.

The cast includes Billy Mitchell's older brother Charlie (Charlie Heptinstall), Peggy's husband Eric (George Russo), and Billy and Charlie's father Stephen (Dean Roberts).

The Mitchell family was "struck hard by a Britain in the economic crisis" in the winter of 1979, and Peggy was trying to keep things afloat since her marriage to Eric was "showing its fractures."

A representative for the serial claimed that viewers would also be transported back to current-day Phil's (Steve McFadden) childhood, when "clues to his presence will certainly be revealed."

The executive producer of EastEnders Chris Clenshaw stated that the episode will "delve into the family's background."

Trouble is never too far away when it comes to the Mitchells, therefore there are twists, turns, and secrets uncovered, he said.

It was revealed last week that Bobby Brazier, a model and the late reality-TV actress Jade Goody's son, will be appearing in the serial opera as Little Mo's son Freddie Slater.
