The Euro 2022 championship game on Sunday will be a "defining moment" for everyone who has ever worn the England jersey, according to midfielder Jill Scott of the national team.

Jill Scott on the Germany final: "England won't forget everyone who came before".

At Wembley, the Lionesses take on eight-time champion Germany in an attempt to win their first major competition.

The year when central contracts were first used for the women's squad, 2009, Scott started in England's 6-2 loss to Germany in the Euros championship game.

It's like day and night, she remarked.

We don't want to forget about anyone who has worn the jersey before, said midfielder Scott, who has played 160 times for England since making her debut in August 2006. Scott has been a major contributor to the development of the women's game in England.

"My voice begins to slightly tremble just thinking about it. There is still time for us to pursue our aspirations."

Six significant developments over a decade

How can England stop Popp? How can I watch the Euro 2022 championship game on BBC Daily Euros?

A football feast will be had during the England-Germany match.

At Sheffield United's Bramall Lane on Tuesday, England thrashed second-ranked Sweden 4-0 to go to the championship game, while Germany defeated France 2-1 on Wednesday.

The championship game on Sunday will be played at a sold-out Wembley, which has a capacity of 87,200 and may break the attendance record for a male or female European Championship event.

Scott, 35, who just left Manchester City after nine years with the club, continued, "Simply where the game is at, we had maybe 15,000 at the final [in 2009] and now to have approximately 90,000 will just be wonderful.

"We are aware that taking an extra step on Sunday can actually be quite significant. I think about it 50 times a day.

"We are aware of how difficult the game will be. Although we will treat them with the highest respect, we can't help but daydream occasionally.

"The women's team is a top priority for the FA. I believe it has been a journey to reach to this level as we received the central contracts in 2009 and from that point they heavily invested in the WSL.

"This Sunday is for all the players that came before them.

"I hope they realize they have their hands on it too if we manage to raise the trophy on Sunday."

Scott asserts that England are in a confident frame of mind after scoring 20 goals and allowing only one goal enrooted to the final, despite Germany attempting to win a record-extending ninth European championship.

"The FA's first focus is the women's team. As they massively invested in the WSL when we obtained the central contracts in 2009, I think it has been a struggle to get here.

"All the players that came before them will be remembered on Sunday.

If we are successful in raising the trophy on Sunday, I hope people realize they too have a hold of it.

Despite Germany seeking to win a record-extending ninth European title, Scott claims that England are in a confident state of mind after scoring 20 goals and only conceding one goal enrooted to the final.

Germany are extremely muscular, well-drilled, and play the same way they have for years, she continued.

They have always had goal scorers, and they like a good fight. They now have Alex Popp [who, with six goals, is tied with Beth Mead of England for the Golden Boot].

"We anticipate a challenging test. Although it will be incredibly challenging, we must have a lot of faith in the way we've played. Who knows when we'll cross that white line?
